Live by Night (2016)
Live by Night is a 2016 American crime drama film written, directed, co-produced and starring Ben Affleck, based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Dennis Lehane. The film also stars Elle Fanning, Brendan Gleeson, Chris Messina, Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldana and Chris Cooper, and follows an Ybor City bootlegger who becomes a notorious gangster.
Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, the film premiered in New York City on December 13, 2016. It began a limited release in the United States on December 25, 2016 before going wide on January 13, 2017. It got generally negative reviews and has grossed $15 million.
It’s the Roaring `20s and Prohibition hasn’t stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies. The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve, and Joe Coughlin, the son of the Boston Police superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. But even among criminals there are rules, and Joe breaks a big one: crossing a powerful mob boss by stealing his money and his moll.
