The film stars <a title=\"Melissa McCarthy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melissa_McCarthy\">Melissa McCarthy<\/a>, <a title=\"Maya Rudolph\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maya_Rudolph\">Maya Rudolph<\/a>, <a title=\"Joel McHale\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joel_McHale\">Joel McHale<\/a>, <a title=\"Elizabeth Banks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elizabeth_Banks\">Elizabeth Banks<\/a>, and <a title=\"Bill Barretta\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Barretta\">Bill Barretta<\/a>. The plot, set in a world where puppets and humans co-exist, follows a joint police force who must solve a recent murder spree of retired sitcom stars. The film was first announced in 2008 by <a title=\"The Jim Henson Company\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Jim_Henson_Company\">The Jim Henson Company<\/a>, the production studio of <a title=\"The Muppets\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Muppets\">Muppets<\/a> creator <a title=\"Jim Henson\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Henson\">Jim Henson<\/a>. Various actors, including <a title=\"Cameron Diaz\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cameron_Diaz\">Cameron Diaz<\/a>, <a title=\"Katherine Heigl\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katherine_Heigl\">Katherine Heigl<\/a>, and <a title=\"Jamie Foxx\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jamie_Foxx\">Jamie Foxx<\/a>, were approached to star before McCarthy signed on in May 2017. Filming began in <a title=\"Los Angeles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a> that September, and involved the use of over 120 puppets. The release marks the film debut of Henson Alternative, a banner of The Jim Henson Company that specializes in adult content.\u00a0<i>The Happytime Murders<\/i> was released on August 24, 2018, by <a title=\"STX Entertainment\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/STX_Entertainment\">STXfilms<\/a>. When two puppets from an old TV show wind up dead, Phil suspects something is afoot and rejoins the LAPD as a consultant.
