Nehma, an Adivasi woman from the Oraon tribe, returns to her ancestral village with her children, Dhaanu (12) and Guntu (1), after her divorce. She begins work as a ‘data labeller,’ training AI models to recognise objects in images and videos. Finding AI childlike in its learning process, she imagines it seeing the world through her eyes, a connection she longs for with Dhaanu. Even as Nehma faces the challenge of giving Dhaanu-forever tempted to flee back to the city-a reason to stay, she notices AI adopting harmful human biases, some echoing prejudices against her community. Ultimately, Nehma realises she’s battling not just for Dhaanu’s future but for how technology and the world see people like her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Humans in the Loop<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a 2024\u00a0Hindi<\/a>–Kurukh<\/a>-language\u00a0drama<\/a>\u00a0film written and directed by Aranya Sahay and produced by Storiculture. The film follows an\u00a0Adivasi<\/a>\u00a0woman from\u00a0Jharkhand<\/a>\u00a0who unexpectedly finds herself interacting with artificial intelligence, unraveling its hidden biases and ethical dilemmas. Inspired by an article by journalist Karishma Mehrotra in ”FiftyTwo” titled “Human Touch”,[<\/span>2]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0the film sheds light on AI bias and its disproportionate impact on women in technology. It highlights the contributions of women in the field of data annotation and algorithmic development while questioning the growing intersection of AI and marginalised communities.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
