Black Mesa<\/b><\/i>\u00a0is a\u00a0first-person shooter<\/a> video game, developed and published by Crowbar Collective. Following the first release of\u00a0Black Mesa<\/i>, the team announced work on a\u00a0Definitive Edition<\/i>, or\u00a0Black Mesa 1.5<\/i>, revamping non-Xen levels from the original Valve design to make them more challenging, as well as to take advantage of new lighting features available in the Source engine.[34]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0This free update was released on November 25, 2020.[35]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The remake’s final release in 2020 was similarly praised by reviewers. On review aggregate\u00a0OpenCritic<\/a><\/i>,\u00a0Black Mesa<\/i>\u00a0had an average 86\/100 review score with 100% approval rating based on 14 reviews.[53]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0PC Gamer<\/a><\/i>\u00a0said the overall project felt like a professional work, and that while the original structure of\u00a0Half-Life<\/i>\u00a0hampered some of\u00a0Black Mesa<\/i>, the redesigns that were done to the original levels for the Source engine were well done, particularly with the new Xen sections that helped\u00a0Black Mesa<\/i>\u00a0Xen to feel more like a proper closure to the game than the original version.[54]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Eurogamer<\/a><\/i>\u00a0said that\u00a0Black Mesa<\/i>\u00a0felt more like an evolution than a remake of\u00a0Half-Life<\/i>, with the designs of the Crowbar Collective to trim down certain levels while adding other features helped to enhance the overall product, making the overall title more of a\u00a0survival horror<\/a>\u00a0than a first-person shooter.[55]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Dario Casali, a designer at Valve who has worked on all\u00a0Half-Life<\/i>\u00a0games, remarked in an interview that during development on\u00a0Half-Life: Alyx<\/i>\u00a0he attempted to play the entirety of the original\u00a0Half-Life<\/i>\u00a0again for research, but after five hours decided to play\u00a0Black Mesa<\/i>\u00a0instead, reasoning it was a much more enjoyable product.[56]<\/a><\/sup><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
