Gangs of Wasseypur \u2013 Part 1<\/b><\/i> (stylised as Gangs of \u0935\u093e\u0938\u0947\u092a\u0941\u0930<\/b><\/i>) is a 2012 Indian Hindi<\/a>-language crime film<\/a> directed by Anurag Kashyap<\/a>,[9]<\/a><\/sup> and written by Kashyap and Zeishan Quadri<\/a>. It is the first installment of the Gangs of Wasseypur<\/a><\/i> series, centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad, Jharkhand<\/a>, and the underlying power struggles, politics and vengeance between three crime families. Part 1<\/i> features ensemble cast with Manoj Bajpayee<\/a>, Nawazuddin Siddiqui<\/a>, Richa Chadda<\/a>, Huma Qureshi<\/a>, Vineet Kumar Singh<\/a>, Tigmanshu Dhulia<\/a> and Pankaj Tripathi<\/a> in the major roles. Its story spans from the early 1940s to the mid-1990s. Both parts were originally shot as a single film measuring a total of 319 minutes and screened at the 2012 Cannes<\/a> Directors’ Fortnight<\/a>[10]<\/a><\/sup>[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup>[13]<\/a><\/sup> but since no Indian theatre would volunteer to screen a five plus hour film, it was divided into two parts (160 minutes and 159 minutes respectively) for the Indian market.<\/p>\n
