The Third Man<\/b><\/i> is a 1949 British film noir<\/a> directed by Carol Reed<\/a>, written by Graham Greene<\/a>, and starring Joseph Cotten<\/a>, Alida Valli<\/a>, Orson Welles<\/a>, and Trevor Howard<\/a>. The film is set in post\u2013World War II Vienna<\/a>. It centres on Holly Martins, an American who is given a job in Vienna by his friend Harry Lime, but when Holly arrives in Vienna he gets the news that Lime is dead. Martins then meets with Lime’s acquaintances in an attempt to investigate what he considers a suspicious death. The atmospheric use of black-and-white expressionist<\/a> cinematography<\/a> by Robert Krasker<\/a>, with harsh lighting<\/a> and distorted “Dutch angle<\/a>” camera technique, is a major feature of The Third Man<\/i>. Combined with the iconic theme music, seedy locations and acclaimed performances from the cast, the style evokes the atmosphere of an exhausted, cynical post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Set in postwar Vienna, Austria, “The Third Man” stars Joseph Cotten as Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, who arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime (Orson Welles), only to find him dead. Martins develops a conspiracy theory after learning of a “third man” present at the time of Harry’s death, running into interference from British officer Maj. Calloway (Trevor Howard) and falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover, Anna (Alida Valli).<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
