Howl’s Moving Castle<\/b><\/i> (Japanese<\/a>: \u30cf\u30a6\u30eb\u306e\u52d5\u304f\u57ce<\/span> Hepburn<\/a>: Hauru no Ugoku Shiro<\/i>) is a 2004 Japanese animated<\/a>, fantasy film<\/a> written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki<\/a>. The film is loosely based on the 1986 novel of the same name<\/a> by British author Diana Wynne Jones<\/a>. The film was produced by Toshio Suzuki<\/a>, animated by Studio Ghibli<\/a> and distributed by Toho<\/a>. The Japanese voice cast featured Chieko Baisho<\/a> and Takuya Kimura<\/a>, while the version dubbed in English starred Jean Simmons<\/a>, Emily Mortimer<\/a>, Lauren Bacall<\/a> and Christian Bale<\/a>. The story is set in a fictional kingdom where both magic and early 20th-century technology are prevalent, against the backdrop of a war with another kingdom. The film tells the story of a young, content milliner named Sophie after she is turned into an old woman by a witch who enters her shop and curses her. She encounters a wizard named Howl, and gets caught up in his resistance to fighting for the king.<\/p>\n

Sophie (Emily Mortimer) has an uneventful life at her late father’s hat shop, but all that changes when she befriends wizard Howl (Christian Bale), who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste (Lauren Bacall) takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous hag and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
