My Neighbor Totoro<\/b><\/i> (Japanese<\/a>: \u3068\u306a\u308a\u306e\u30c8\u30c8\u30ed<\/span> Hepburn<\/a>: Tonari no Totoro, “The Totoro Next-door”<\/i>) is a 1988 Japanese animated<\/a> fantasy film<\/a> written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki<\/a> and animated by Studio Ghibli<\/a> for Tokuma Shoten<\/a>. The film\u2014which stars the voice actors Noriko Hidaka<\/a>, Chika Sakamoto<\/a>, and Hitoshi Takagi<\/a>\u2014tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei) of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan<\/a>. The film won the Animage<\/a> Anime Grand Prix prize and the Mainichi Film Award<\/a> and Kinema Junpo Award<\/a> for Best Film in 1988. It also received the Special Award at the Blue Ribbon Awards<\/a> in the same year. In 1989, Streamline Pictures<\/a> produced an exclusive dub<\/a> for use on transpacific flights by Japan Airlines<\/a>. Troma Films<\/a>, under their 50th St. Films banner, distributed the dub of the film co-produced by Jerry Beck<\/a>. This dub was released to United States theaters in 1993, on VHS and laserdisc in the United States by Fox Video<\/a> in 1994, and on DVD in 2002. The rights to this dub expired in 2004, so it was re-released by Walt Disney Home Entertainment<\/a> on 7 March 2006[1]<\/a><\/sup> with a new dub cast. This version was also released in Australia by Madman<\/a> on 15 March 2006[2]<\/a><\/sup> and in the UK by Optimum Releasing<\/a> on 27 March 2006. This DVD release is the first version of the film in the United States to include both Japanese and English language tracks, as Fox did not have the rights to the Japanese audio track for their version.<\/p>\n

This acclaimed animated tale by director Hayao Miyazaki follows schoolgirl Satsuke and her younger sister, Mei, as they settle into an old country house with their father and wait for their mother to recover from an illness in an area hospital. As the sisters explore their new home, they encounter and befriend playful spirits in their house and the nearby forest, most notably the massive cuddly creature known as Totoro.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
