Pan’s Labyrinth<\/b><\/i> (Spanish<\/a>: El laberinto del fauno<\/b><\/i>, lit.<\/a>\u00a0<\/small>‘The Labyrinth of the Faun<\/a>‘) is a 2006 dark fantasy<\/a> drama<\/a> film[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup> written and directed by Guillermo del Toro<\/a>, and starring Ivana Baquero<\/a>, Sergi L\u00f3pez<\/a>, Maribel Verd\u00fa<\/a>, Doug Jones<\/a>, and Ariadna Gil<\/a>. It was produced and distributed internationally by Esperanto Filmoj<\/a> and Warner Bros. Pictures<\/a>, in association with Telecinco Cinema<\/a>. The story takes place in Spain<\/a> during the summer of 1944, five years after the Spanish Civil War<\/a>, during the early Francoist<\/a> period. The narrative intertwines this real world with a mythical world centered on an overgrown, abandoned labyrinth<\/a> and a mysterious faun<\/a> creature, with whom the main character, Ofelia, interacts. Ofelia’s stepfather, the Falangist<\/a> Captain Vidal, hunts the Spanish Maquis<\/a> who fight against the Francoist regime in the region, while Ofelia’s pregnant mother Carmen grows increasingly ill. Ofelia meets several strange and magical creatures who become central to her story, leading her through the trials of the old labyrinth garden. The film employs make-up, animatronics<\/a>, and CGI<\/a> effects to bring life to its creatures.<\/p>\n

It’s 1944 and the Allies have invaded Nazi-held Europe. In Spain, a troop of soldiers are sent to a remote forest to flush out the rebels. They are led by Capitan Vidal, a murdering sadist, and with him are his new wife Carmen and her daughter from a previous marriage, 11-year-old Ofelia. Ofelia witnesses her stepfather’s sadistic brutality and is drawn into Pan’s Labyrinth, a magical world of mythical beings.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
