Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night<\/b><\/i> is a Metroidvania<\/a> video game developed by ArtPlay and published by 505 Games<\/a>. The game’s development was led by former Castlevania<\/a><\/i> series producer Koji Igarashi<\/a>, and is considered a spiritual successor<\/a> to the series. Bloodstained<\/i> was released for Microsoft Windows<\/a>, Nintendo Switch<\/a>, PlayStation 4<\/a>, and Xbox One<\/a> in June 2019. A retro-style companion game, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon<\/a><\/i>, was developed by Inti Creates<\/a> and released in May 2018. Igarashi conceived the game after his departure from Konami<\/a> in 2014, prompted by numerous fan requests for him to make another Metroidvania<\/a>-type game. He used the crowdfunding<\/a> platform Kickstarter<\/a> to demonstrate to potential funding agencies of the demand for the game in 2015, which successfully raised more than US$5.5 million from backers, making it one of the most funded video game campaigns on the platform.<\/p>\n

Bloodstained<\/i> takes place in the early 19th Century and follows the protagonist<\/a> Miriam, an orphan<\/a> who was taken in by the Alchemists<\/a>‘ Guild and subjected to experiments with demonically-powered crystals called Shards, granting her incredible power as a “Shardbinder” but causing her body to crystallize over time until she is completely consumed. Struggling to cope with her cruel transformation and fearing the loss of her humanity, Miriam finds solace in Gebel, a fellow Shardbinder who encourages her to never fall into despair, and Johannes, a student alchemist who is able to slow (but not fully prevent) the Shards’ growing corruption on her body. Prior to the beginning of the game, the Alchemists’ Guild, fearing the loss of support as the Industrial Revolution<\/a> swayed the people into pursuing material gain, used the Shardbinders they created as a catalyst to summon the forces of Hell<\/a> in what was supposed to be a scare tactic, but instead brought forth uncontrollable destruction. Gebel is sacrificed with the other Shardbinders during the summoning, but he alone survives. Miriam, meanwhile, does not take part as she falls into an unnatural slumber before she can be sacrificed.<\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
