Dil Chahta Hai<\/b><\/i> (English: What the heart wants<\/i>) is a 2001 Indian comedy-drama film<\/a> starring Aamir Khan<\/a>, Akshaye Khanna<\/a>, Saif Ali Khan<\/a>, Preity Zinta<\/a>, Sonali Kulkarni<\/a> and Dimple Kapadia<\/a>. The first film written and directed by Farhan Akhtar<\/a>, it is set in modern-day urban Mumbai<\/a> and Sydney<\/a>, and focuses on a major period of transition in the lives of three young friends. In 2001, the film won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi<\/a>. It performed moderately in the urban areas of the country compared to the rural areas, which was attributed by critics to the city-oriented lifestyle depicted in which all the characters are from rich or upper middle class families.<\/p>\n

Three friends, Akash (Aamir Khan), Sameer (Saif Ali Khan) and Siddharth (Akshaye Khanna), discover that post-collegiate life will test their tight-knit bond. As sweet Sameer falls for Pooja (Sonali Kulkarni), an unavailable beauty, Siddharth risks everything to pursue an older divorc\u00e9e named Tara (Dimple Kapadia) whom his friends and family find unworthy of him.
