The Great Escape<\/b><\/i> is a 1963 American epic<\/a> war film<\/a> starring Steve McQueen<\/a>, James Garner<\/a> and Richard Attenborough<\/a>, and featuring James Donald<\/a>, Charles Bronson<\/a>, Donald Pleasence<\/a>, James Coburn<\/a> and Hannes Messemer<\/a>. It was filmed in Panavision<\/a>.The film is based on Paul Brickhill<\/a>‘s 1950 nonfiction book of the same name<\/a>, a firsthand account of the mass escape<\/a> by British Commonwealth<\/a> prisoners of war<\/a> from German POW camp<\/a> Stalag Luft III<\/a> in Sagan (now \u017baga\u0144<\/a>, Poland), in the province of Lower Silesia<\/a>, Nazi Germany<\/a>. The film was based on the real events but deviated significantly from historical events, depicting a heavily fictionalised version of the escape with numerous compromises for its commercial appeal, such as including Americans among the escapees.It was made by The Mirisch Company<\/a>, released by United Artists<\/a>, and produced and directed by John Sturges<\/a>. The film had its Royal World Premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square<\/a> in London’s West End on 20 June 1963.[2]<\/a><\/sup> The film became very popular and is now considered a classic.<\/p>\n

Imprisoned during World War II in a German POW camp, a group of Allied soldiers are intent on breaking out, not only to escape, but also to draw Nazi forces away from battle to search for fugitives. Among the prisoners determined to escape are American Captain Virgil Hilts (Steve McQueen) and British Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett (Richard Attenborough). Outwitting their captors by digging a tunnel out of the prison grounds, the soldiers find the stakes much higher when escape becomes a reality.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
