Ikiru<\/b><\/i> (\u751f\u304d\u308b<\/span>, “To Live”) is a 1952 Japanese drama film<\/a> directed and co-written by Akira Kurosawa<\/a> and starring Takashi Shimura<\/a>. The film examines the struggles of a terminally ill Tokyo<\/a> bureaucrat and his final quest for meaning. The screenplay was partly inspired by Leo Tolstoy<\/a>‘s 1886 novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich<\/a><\/i>. The major themes of the film include learning how to live, the inefficiency of bureaucracy<\/a>, and decaying family life in Japan, which have been the subject of analysis by academics and critics. The film has received widespread critical acclaim, and in Japan won awards for Best Film at the Kinema Junpo<\/a> and Mainichi Film Awards<\/a>. It was remade as a television film in 2007.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Mr. Watanabe suddenly finds that he has terminal cancer. He vows to make his final days meaningful. His attempts to communicate his anguish to his son and daughter-in-law lead only to heartbreak. Finally, inspired by an unselfish co-worker, he turns his efforts to bringing happiness to others by building a playground in a dreary slum neighborhood. When the park is finally completed, he is able to face death with peaceful acceptance.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
