Incendies<\/b><\/i> (French:\u00a0<\/small>[\u025b\u0303.s\u0251\u0303.di]<\/a><\/span>, “Fires”) is a 2010 Canadian mystery<\/a>–drama film<\/a> written and directed by Denis Villeneuve<\/a>. Adapted from Wajdi Mouawad<\/a>‘s play of the same name<\/a>, Incendies<\/i> stars Lubna Azabal<\/a>, M\u00e9lissa D\u00e9sormeaux-Poulin<\/a>, Maxim Gaudette<\/a>, and R\u00e9my Girard<\/a>. The story concerns Canadian twins who travel to their mother’s native country in the Middle East<\/a> to uncover her hidden past amidst a bloody civil war. While the country is unnamed, the events in the film are heavily influenced by the Lebanese Civil War<\/a> and particularly the story of prisoner Souha Bechara<\/a>. The film was shot mainly in Montreal, with a few days spent in Jordan. It premiered at the Venice<\/a> and Toronto<\/a> Film Festivals in September 2010 and was released in Quebec<\/a> on 17 September 2010. It met with critical acclaim in Canada and abroad and won numerous awards. In 2011, it was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a>. Incendies<\/i> also won eight Genie Awards<\/a>, including Best Motion Picture<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nawal (Lubna Azabal), a dying Middle Eastern woman living in Montreal, leaves separate letters to her twin children to be read once she passes away. Jeanne (M\u00e9lissa D\u00e9sormeaux-Poulin) is to deliver hers to the father the twins never knew, and Simon (Maxim Gaudette) is to give his to the brother they never knew they had. The siblings travel to the Middle East separately, where they each experience acts of brutality, uncover a startling family history, and have revelations about themselves.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
