The Wind Rises<\/b><\/i> (Japanese<\/a>: \u98a8\u7acb\u3061\u306c<\/span> Hepburn<\/a>: Kaze Tachinu<\/i>) is a 2013 Japanese animated<\/a> historical<\/a> drama film<\/a> written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki<\/a>, animated by Studio Ghibli<\/a> for the Nippon Television Network<\/a>, Dentsu<\/a>, Hakuhodo DY Media Partners<\/a>, Walt Disney Japan<\/a>, Mitsubishi<\/a>, Toho<\/a> and KDDI<\/a> and distributed by Toho<\/a>. It was released on 20 July 2013, in Japan, and was released in North America on 21 February 2014 under Disney’s adult movie brand Touchstone Pictures<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]\u00a0<\/a><\/sup>The Wind Rises<\/i> is a fictionalized<\/a> biopic<\/a> of Jiro Horikoshi<\/a> (1903\u20131982), designer of the Mitsubishi A5M<\/a> fighter aircraft and its successor, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero<\/a>, used by the Empire of Japan<\/a> during World War II<\/a>. The film is adapted from Miyazaki’s manga<\/a> of the same name, which was in turn loosely based on both the 1937 novel The Wind Has Risen<\/a><\/i> by Tatsuo Hori<\/a> and the life of Jiro Horikoshi.[7]<\/a><\/sup> It was the final film directed by Miyazaki before his retirement in September 2013.[8]<\/a><\/sup> However, in 2017, Miyazaki announced he had come out of retirement[9]<\/a><\/sup> to produce How Do You Live?<\/a><\/i>, which is expected to be released in 2020 or 2021.[10]\u00a0<\/a><\/sup>The Wind Rises<\/i> was the highest-grossing Japanese film in Japan in 2013. It won and was nominated for several awards, including nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature<\/a>, the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a>, and the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year<\/a>.<\/p>\n
