Yojimbo<\/b><\/i> (\u7528\u5fc3\u68d2<\/span> Y\u014djinb\u014d<\/i>) is a 1961 samurai film<\/a> directed by Akira Kurosawa<\/a>. It tells the story of a r\u014dnin<\/a>, portrayed by Toshiro Mifune<\/a>, who arrives in a small town where competing crime lords vie for supremacy. The two bosses each try to hire the newcomer as a bodyguard. Based on the success of Yojimbo<\/i>, Kurosawa’s next film, Sanjuro<\/a><\/i> (1962), was altered to incorporate the lead character of this film.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup> In both films, the character wears a rather dilapidated dark kimono bearing the same family mon<\/i><\/a> (likely the emblem of his former samurai clan, before he became a r\u014dnin<\/a><\/i>).<\/p>\n

A nameless ronin, or samurai with no master (Toshir\u00f4 Mifune), enters a small village in feudal Japan where two rival businessmen are struggling for control of the local gambling trade. Taking the name Sanjuro Kuwabatake, the ronin convinces both silk merchant Tazaemon (Kamatari Fujiwara) and sake merchant Tokuemon (Takashi Shimura) to hire him as a personal bodyguard, then artfully sets in motion a full-scale gang war between the two ambitious and unscrupulous men.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
