It focuses on an Iranian middle-class<\/a> couple who separate, the disappointment and desperation suffered by their daughter due to the egotistical disputes and separation of her parents, and the conflicts that arise when the husband hires a lower-class<\/a> caregiver<\/a> for his elderly father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease<\/a>. A Separation<\/i> won the Oscar<\/a> for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a> in 2012, becoming the first Iranian film to win the award.[3]<\/a><\/sup> It received the Golden Bear<\/a> for Best Film and the Silver Bears for Best Actress<\/a> and Best Actor<\/a> at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival<\/a>, becoming the first Iranian film to win the Golden Bear.[4]<\/a><\/sup> It also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup> and the Asia Pacific Screen Award<\/a> for Best Feature Film.[6]<\/a><\/sup> The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay<\/a>,[7]<\/a><\/sup> making it the first non-English film in five years<\/a> to achieve this.<\/p>\n

When Nader (Payman Maadi), a bank employee, refuses to leave Tehran, his wife, Simin (Leila Hatami) sues for divorce in the hope that she can make a better life for their young daughter abroad. Needing someone to care for his senile father while he’s at work, Nader hires Razieh (Sareh Bayat), a married woman whose chador hides her pregnancy. One day, after becoming angry with Razieh, Nader shoves her, and she has a miscarriage, leading Razieh’s husband to take Nader to court.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
