The Apartment<\/b><\/i> is a 1960 American romantic comedy<\/a> film, produced and directed by Billy Wilder<\/a> from a screenplay he co-wrote with I. A. L. Diamond<\/a>, starring Jack Lemmon<\/a> and Shirley MacLaine<\/a>. The supporting cast are Fred MacMurray<\/a>, Ray Walston<\/a>, Jack Kruschen<\/a>, David Lewis<\/a>, Willard Waterman<\/a>, David White<\/a>, Hope Holiday<\/a>, and Edie Adams<\/a>.The story follows C. C. \u201cBud\u201d Baxter (Lemmon), an insurance<\/a> clerk who, in the hope of climbing the corporate ladder, lets more-senior coworkers use his Upper West Side<\/a> apartment to conduct extramarital affairs. Bud is attracted to the elevator operator<\/a>, Fran Kubelik (MacLaine) who in turn is having an affair with Bud’s immediate boss, Sheldrake (MacMurray).\u00a0The Apartment<\/i> was distributed by United Artists<\/a> to favorable reviews and commercial success, despite controversy owing to its subject matter. At the 33rd Academy Awards<\/a>, The Apartment<\/i> was nominated for ten awards and won five, including Best Picture<\/a>, Best Director<\/a>, and Best Screenplay<\/a>. Lemmon and MacLaine were Oscar-nominated and won Golden Globe Awards<\/a> for their performances in the film. It provided the basis for Promises, Promises<\/a><\/i>, a 1968 Broadway<\/a> musical<\/a> by Burt Bacharach<\/a>, Hal David<\/a>, and Neil Simon<\/a>.In the years since its release, The Apartment<\/i> has come to be regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, appearing in lists by the American Film Institute<\/a> and Sight and Sound<\/a><\/i> magazine, and being selected by the United States Library of Congress<\/a> for preservation in the National Film Registry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Insurance worker C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon) lends his Upper West Side apartment to company bosses to use for extramarital affairs. When his manager Mr. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray) begins using Baxter’s apartment in exchange for promoting him, Baxter is disappointed to learn that Sheldrake’s mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine), the elevator girl at work whom Baxter is interested in himself. Soon Baxter must decide between the girl he loves and the advancement of his career.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
