Monty Python and the Holy Grail<\/b><\/i> is a 1975 British independent comedy film<\/a> concerning the Arthurian legend<\/a>, written and performed by the Monty Python<\/a> comedy group of Graham Chapman<\/a>, John Cleese<\/a>, Terry Gilliam<\/a>, Eric Idle<\/a>, Terry Jones<\/a> and Michael Palin<\/a>, and directed by Gilliam and Jones.[n 1]<\/a><\/sup> It was conceived during the hiatus<\/a> between the third and fourth series of their BBC television series Monty Python’s Flying Circus<\/a><\/i>. In contrast to the group’s first film, And Now for Something Completely Different<\/a><\/i>, a compilation of sketches<\/a> from the first two television series, Holy Grail<\/i> draws on new material, parodying the legend of King Arthur<\/a>‘s quest for the Holy Grail<\/a>. 30 years later, Idle used the film as the basis for the musical Spamalot<\/a><\/i>.\u00a0Monty Python and the Holy Grail<\/i> grossed more than any British film exhibited in the US in 1975. In the US, it was selected as the second best comedy of all time in the ABC<\/a> special Best in Film: The Greatest Movies of Our Time<\/a><\/i>. In the UK, readers of Total Film<\/a><\/i> magazine ranked it the fifth greatest comedy film of all time; a similar poll of Channel 4<\/a> viewers placed it sixth (2000).<\/p>\n

A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
