The Sting<\/b><\/i> is a 1973 American caper film<\/a> set in September 1936, involving a complicated plot<\/a> by two professional grifters<\/a> (Paul Newman<\/a> and Robert Redford<\/a>) to con<\/a> a mob boss (Robert Shaw<\/a>).[2]<\/a><\/sup> The film was directed by George Roy Hill<\/a>,[3]<\/a><\/sup> who had directed Newman and Redford in the western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid<\/a><\/i>. Created by screenwriter David S. Ward<\/a>, the story was inspired by real-life cons perpetrated by brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff and documented by David Maurer<\/a> in his book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man<\/i>. The title phrase refers to the moment when a con artist finishes the “play” and takes the mark’s<\/a> money. If a con is successful, the mark does not realize he has been cheated until the con men are long gone. The film is played out in distinct sections with old-fashioned title cards<\/a>, the lettering and illustrations rendered in a style reminiscent of the Saturday Evening Post<\/a><\/i>. The film is noted for its anachronistic use of ragtime<\/a>, particularly the melody “The Entertainer<\/a>” by Scott Joplin<\/a>, which was adapted (along with others by Joplin) for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch<\/a> (and a top-ten chart single for Hamlisch when released as a single from the film’s soundtrack). The film’s success created a resurgence of interest in Joplin’s work.<\/p>\n

Following the murder of a mutual friend, aspiring con man Johnny Hooker (Robert Redford) teams up with old pro Henry Gondorff (Paul Newman) to take revenge on the ruthless crime boss responsible, Doyle Lonnegan (Robert Shaw). Hooker and Gondorff set about implementing an elaborate scheme, one so crafty that Lonnegan won’t even know he’s been swindled. As their big con unfolds, however, things don’t go according to plan, requiring some last-minute improvisation by the undaunted duo.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
