Bicycle Thieves<\/b><\/i> (Italian<\/a>: Ladri di biciclette<\/b><\/i>; sometimes known in the United States as The Bicycle Thief<\/b><\/i>)[4]<\/a><\/sup> is a 1948 Italian<\/a> drama film<\/a> directed by Vittorio De Sica<\/a>. The film follows the story of a poor father searching post-World War II Rome for his stolen bicycle<\/a>, without which he will lose the job which was to be the salvation of his young family. Adapted for the screen by Cesare Zavattini<\/a> from a novel by Luigi Bartolini<\/a>, and starring Lamberto Maggiorani<\/a> as the desperate father and Enzo Staiola<\/a> as his plucky young son, Bicycle Thieves<\/i> is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Italian neorealism<\/a>. It received an Academy Honorary Award<\/a> (most outstanding foreign language film) in 1950 and, just four years after its release, was deemed the greatest film of all time<\/a> by Sight & Sound<\/a><\/i> magazine’s poll of filmmakers and critics;[5]<\/a><\/sup> fifty years later the same poll ranked it sixth among the greatest-ever films.[6]<\/a><\/sup> It is also one of the top ten among the British Film Institute’s list of films you should see by the age of 14<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Unemployed Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani) is elated when he finally finds work hanging posters around war-torn Rome. His wife, Maria (Lianella Carell), sells the family’s bed linens to retrieve Antonio’s bicycle from the pawnshop so he can take the job. However, disaster strikes when Antonio’s bicycle is stolen, and his new job is doomed unless he can find the thief. With the help of his lively son, Bruno (Enzo Staiola), Antonio combs the city, growing increasingly desperate for justice.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
