Full Metal Jacket<\/b><\/i> is a 1987 war film<\/a> directed, co-written, and produced by Stanley Kubrick<\/a> and starring Matthew Modine<\/a>, R. Lee Ermey<\/a>, Vincent D’Onofrio<\/a> and Adam Baldwin<\/a>. The screenplay by Kubrick, Michael Herr<\/a>, and Gustav Hasford<\/a> was based on Hasford’s novel The Short-Timers<\/a><\/i> (1979). The storyline follows a platoon<\/a> of U.S. Marines<\/a> through their training<\/a>, primarily focusing on two privates, Joker and Pyle, who struggle to get through boot camp under their abusive drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, and the experiences of two of the platoon’s Marines in the Tet Offensive<\/a> during the Vietnam War<\/a>. The film’s title refers to the full metal jacket bullet<\/a>used by soldiers. The film was released in the United States on June 26, 1987. It was the last of Kubrick’s films to be released during his lifetime.<\/p>\n

Stanley Kubrick’s take on the Vietnam War follows smart-aleck Private Davis (Matthew Modine), quickly christened “Joker” by his foul-mouthed drill sergeant (R. Lee Ermey), and pudgy Private Lawrence (Vincent D’Onofrio), nicknamed “Gomer Pyle,” as they endure the rigors of basic training. Though Pyle takes a frightening detour, Joker graduates to the Marine Corps and is sent to Vietnam as a journalist, covering — and eventually participating in — the bloody Battle of Hu\u00e9.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
