A Clockwork Orange<\/b><\/i> is a 1971 dystopian<\/a> crime film<\/a> adapted, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick<\/a>, based on Anthony Burgess<\/a>‘s 1962 novel of the same name<\/a>. It employs disturbing, violent images to comment on psychiatry<\/a>, juvenile delinquency<\/a>, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Britain.\u00a0Alex<\/a> (Malcolm McDowell<\/a>), the central character, is a charismatic, antisocial delinquent whose interests include classical music<\/a> (including Beethoven<\/a>), committing rape, and what is termed “ultra-violence”. He leads a small gang of thugs, Pete (Michael Tarn<\/a>), Georgie (James Marcus<\/a>), and Dim (Warren Clarke<\/a>), whom he calls his droogs<\/i> (from the Russian<\/a> word \u0434\u0440\u0443\u0433, “friend”, “buddy”). The film chronicles the horrific crime spree of his gang, his capture, and attempted rehabilitation via an experimental psychological conditioning technique (the “Ludovico Technique”) promoted by the Minister of the Interior (Anthony Sharp<\/a>). Alex narrates most of the film in Nadsat<\/a>, a fractured adolescent slang composed of Slavic<\/a> (especially Russian), English, and Cockney rhyming slang<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In an England of the future, Alex (Malcolm McDowell) and his “Droogs” spend their nights getting high at the Korova Milkbar before embarking on “a little of the old ultraviolence,” while jauntily warbling “Singin’ in the Rain.” After he’s jailed for bludgeoning the Cat Lady to death, Alex submits to behavior modification technique to earn his freedom; he’s conditioned to abhor violence. Returned to the world defenseless, Alex becomes the victim of his prior victims.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
