Ghost in the Shell<\/b><\/i>[a]<\/a><\/sup> is a 1995 anime<\/a> cyberpunk<\/a> film based on the manga of the same name<\/a> by Masamune Shirow<\/a>. It was written by Kazunori It\u014d<\/a> and directed by Mamoru Oshii<\/a>, and stars the voices of Atsuko Tanaka<\/a>, Akio \u014ctsuka<\/a>, and Iemasa Kayumi<\/a>. Ghost in the Shell<\/i> was a Japanese-British international co-production<\/a>, produced by Kodansha<\/a>, Bandai Visual<\/a> and Manga Entertainment<\/a>, with animation provided by Production I.G<\/a>. The plot follows Motoko Kusanagi<\/a>, a public-security agent, who hunts the mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. The philosophical themes include self-identity in a technologically advanced world. The music, composed by Kenji Kawai<\/a>, includes an ancient Japanese language. Widely considered one of the greatest anime films of all time<\/a>, critics particularly praised the film’s visuals, achieved through a combination of traditional cel<\/a> animation and CGI<\/a> animation. The film, which had a budget over $10 million, was initially a box office failure, before drawing a cult following<\/a> on home video<\/a>, and eventually grossing approximately $43 million in total box office and home video sales revenue. It inspired filmmakers such as the Wachowskis<\/a>, creators of the Matrix<\/a><\/i> films, and James Cameron<\/a>. In 2004, Oshii directed Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence<\/a>,<\/i> billed as a separate work and not a true sequel<\/a>. In 2008, Oshii released an updated version of the original film, Ghost in the Shell 2.0<\/i>, featuring new audio and updated 3D animation. A live-action adaptation<\/a> starring Scarlett Johansson<\/a> was released in 2017.<\/p>\n
