House of Flying Daggers<\/b><\/i> is a 2004 wuxia<\/a><\/i> romance film<\/a> directed by Zhang Yimou<\/a> and starring Andy Lau<\/a>, Zhang Ziyi<\/a> and Takeshi Kaneshiro<\/a>. Unlike other wuxia<\/i> films, it is more of a love story than purely a martial arts film<\/a>. The film opened in limited release<\/a> within the United States on 3 December 2004, in New York City<\/a> and Los Angeles<\/a>, and opened on additional screens throughout the country two weeks later. The film grossed $11,050,094 in United States box office, and then went on to significantly overperform in home video market in the United States.[2]\u00a0<\/a><\/sup>The film was chosen as China’s entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a> for the year 2004, but was not nominated in that category; however, it received a nomination for the 2004’s Academy Award for Best Cinematography<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Tang Dynasty is fighting to keep control over China, a battle they are losing to several rebel groups. One such group is the House of Flying Daggers, who steal from the wealthy and give to the poor. Two police deputies working with the government (Takeshi Kaneshiro, Andy Lau) are ordered to investigate the dancer Mei (Zhang Ziyi), who is rumored to be working with the House of Flying Daggers. But both men fall under her charms and decide to help her escape instead.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
