Citizen Kane<\/b><\/i> is a 1941 American mystery<\/a> drama film<\/a> by Orson Welles<\/a>, its producer, co-screenwriter, director and star. The picture was Welles’s first feature film<\/a>. Nominated for Academy Awards<\/a> in nine categories, it won an Academy Award for Best Writing (Original Screenplay)<\/a> by Herman J. Mankiewicz<\/a> and Welles. Considered by many critics, filmmakers, and fans to be the greatest film ever made<\/a>, Citizen Kane<\/i> was voted as such in five consecutive British Film Institute<\/a> Sight & Sound<\/a><\/i> polls of critics, and it topped the American Film Institute<\/a>‘s 100 Years\u00a0… 100 Movies<\/a> list in 1998, as well as its 2007 update<\/a>. Citizen Kane<\/i> is particularly praised for Gregg Toland<\/a>‘s cinematography, Robert Wise<\/a>‘s editing, its music, and its narrative structure, all of which have been considered innovative and precedent-setting.<\/p>\n

When a reporter is assigned to decipher newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane’s (Orson Welles) dying words, his investigation gradually reveals the fascinating portrait of a complex man who rose from obscurity to staggering heights. Though Kane’s friend and colleague Jedediah Leland (Joseph Cotten), and his mistress, Susan Alexander (Dorothy Comingore), shed fragments of light on Kane’s life, the reporter fears he may never penetrate the mystery of the elusive man’s final word, “Rosebud.”<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
