The Lives of Others<\/b><\/i> (German: Das Leben der Anderen<\/i>) is a 2006 German<\/a> drama film, marking the feature film debut of filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck<\/a>, about the monitoring of East Berlin<\/a> residents by agents of the Stasi<\/a>, the GDR<\/a>‘s secret police. It stars Ulrich M\u00fche<\/a> as Stasi Captain Gerd Wiesler, Ulrich Tukur<\/a> as his superior Anton Grubitz, Sebastian Koch<\/a> as the playwright Georg Dreyman, and Martina Gedeck<\/a> as Dreyman’s lover, a prominent actress named Christa-Maria Sieland. The film was released in Germany on 23 March 2006. At the same time, the screenplay was published by Suhrkamp Verlag<\/a>. The Lives of Others<\/i> won the 2006 Academy Award<\/a> for Best Foreign Language Film<\/a>. The film had earlier won seven Deutscher Filmpreis<\/a> awards\u2014including those for best film, best director, best screenplay, best actor, and best supporting actor\u2014after setting a new record with 11 nominations. It was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 64th Golden Globe Awards<\/a>. The Lives of Others<\/i> cost US$2 million[3]<\/a><\/sup> and grossed more than US$77 million worldwide as of November\u00a02007.<\/p>\n

In 1983 East Berlin, dedicated Stasi officer Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich M\u00fche), doubting that a famous playwright (Sebastian Koch) is loyal to the Communist Party, receives approval to spy on the man and his actress-lover Christa-Maria (Martina Gedeck). Wiesler becomes unexpectedly sympathetic to the couple, then faces conflicting loyalties when his superior takes a liking to Christa-Maria and orders Wiesler to get the playwright out of the way.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
