Grave of the Fireflies<\/b><\/i> (\u706b\u5782\u308b\u306e\u5893<\/span> Hotaru no Haka<\/i>) is a 1988 Japanese animated<\/a> war film<\/a> based on the 1967 semi-autobiographical short story of the same name<\/a> by Akiyuki Nosaka<\/a>. It was written and directed by Isao Takahata<\/a>, and animated by Studio Ghibli<\/a> for the story’s publisher Shinchosha Publishing<\/a> (making it the only Studio Ghibli film under Tokuma Shoten<\/a> ownership that had no involvement from them).[3]<\/a><\/sup> The film stars Tsutomu Tatsumi, Ayano Shiraishi, Yoshiko Shinohara and Akemi Yamaguchi. Set in the city of Kobe, Japan<\/a>, the film tells the story of two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their desperate struggle to survive during the final months of the Second World War<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A devastating meditation on the human cost of war, this animated tale follows Seita (Tsutomu Tatsumi), a teenager charged with the care of his younger sister, Setsuko (Ayano Shiraishi), after an American firebombing during World War II separates the two children from their parents. Their tale of survival is as heartbreaking as it is true to life. The siblings rely completely on each other and struggle against all odds to stay together and stay alive.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
