The Godfather Part II<\/b><\/i> is a 1974 American epic<\/a> crime film<\/a> produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola<\/a> from a screenplay co-written with Mario Puzo<\/a>, starring Al Pacino<\/a> and Robert De Niro<\/a>. Partially based on Puzo’s 1969 novel The Godfather<\/a><\/i>, the film is both sequel<\/a> and prequel<\/a> to The Godfather<\/a><\/i>, presenting parallel dramas: one picks up the 1958 story of Michael Corleone<\/a> (Pacino), the new Don<\/a> of the Corleone crime family<\/a>, protecting the family business in the aftermath of an attempt on his life; the prequel covers the journey of his father, Vito Corleone<\/a> (De Niro), from his Sicilian childhood to the founding of his family enterprise in New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n

An Oscar winner for Best Picture, the film received widespread acclaim from critics, with some deeming it superior to the 1972 original.\u00a0Nominated for eleven Academy Awards<\/a> and the first sequel to win for Best Picture<\/a>, its six Oscars included Best Director<\/a> for Coppola, Best Supporting Actor<\/a> for De Niro and Best Adapted Screenplay<\/a> for Coppola and Puzo. Pacino won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor<\/a> and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Both this film and its predecessor remain highly influential films in the gangster<\/a> genre<\/a>. In 1997, the American Film Institute<\/a> ranked it as the 32nd-greatest film in American film history<\/a> and it kept its rank 10 years later<\/a>.\u00a0It was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry<\/a> of the Library of Congress<\/a> in 1993, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.<\/p>\n

The compelling sequel to “The Godfather,” contrasting the life of Corleone father and son. Traces the problems of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) in 1958 and that of a young immigrant Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) in 1917’s Hell’s Kitchen. Michael survives many misfortunes and Vito is introduced to a life of crime.<\/span><\/p>\n
