The Godfather<\/b><\/i> is a 1972 American<\/a> crime film<\/a> directed by Francis Ford Coppola<\/a> and produced by Albert S. Ruddy<\/a>, based on Mario Puzo<\/a>‘s best-selling novel of the same name<\/a>. It stars Marlon Brando<\/a> and Al Pacino<\/a> as the leaders of a fictional New York crime family. The story, spanning 1945 to 1955, chronicles the family<\/a> under the patriarch Vito Corleone<\/a>, focusing on the transformation of Michael Corleone<\/a> (Pacino) from reluctant family outsider to ruthless Mafia<\/a> boss<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Paramount Pictures<\/a> obtained the rights to the novel before it gained popularity for the price of $80,000. Studio executives had trouble finding a director, as their first few candidates turned down the position. They and Coppola disagreed over who would play several characters, in particular Vito and Michael. Filming was done on location and completed earlier than scheduled. The musical score was composed primarily by Nino Rota<\/a> with additional pieces by Carmine Coppola<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The film was the highest-grossing film of 1972<\/a> and was for a time the highest grossing film ever made<\/a>. It won the Oscars<\/a> for Best Picture<\/a>, Best Actor<\/a> (Brando) and Best Adapted Screenplay<\/a> (for Puzo and Coppola). Its seven other Oscar nominations included Pacino, James Caan<\/a> and Robert Duvall<\/a> for Best Supporting Actor<\/a> and Coppola for Best Director<\/a>. It was followed by sequels The Godfather Part II<\/a><\/i> (1974) and Part III<\/a><\/i> in (1990).<\/p>\n

The Godfather<\/i> is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in world cinema<\/a> and one of the most influential, especially in the gangster<\/a> genre. It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry<\/a> in 1990 and is ranked the second greatest film in American cinema<\/a> (behind Citizen Kane<\/a><\/i>) by the American Film Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, this mob drama, based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando). When the don’s youngest son, Michael (Al Pacino), reluctantly joins the Mafia, he becomes involved in the inevitable cycle of violence and betrayal. Although Michael tries to maintain a normal relationship with his wife, Kay (Diane Keaton), he is drawn deeper into the family business.<\/span><\/p>\n
