Apocalypse Now<\/b><\/i> is a 1979 American epic<\/a> war film<\/a> directed, produced, and co-written by Francis Ford Coppola<\/a>. It stars Marlon Brando<\/a>, Robert Duvall<\/a>, Martin Sheen<\/a>, Frederic Forrest<\/a>, Albert Hall<\/a>, Sam Bottoms<\/a>, Laurence Fishburne<\/a>, and Dennis Hopper<\/a>. The screenplay, co-written by Coppola and John Milius<\/a> (who received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay) and featuring narration written by Michael Herr<\/a>, is an updating of Joseph Conrad<\/a>‘s novella Heart of Darkness<\/a><\/i>. The setting was changed from late 19th-century Congo<\/a> to the Vietnam War<\/a> ca.<\/i> 1969\u201370, the years in which Green Beret Colonel Robert Rheault<\/a>, commander of the 5th Special Forces Group<\/a>, was indicted for murder and President Richard Nixon<\/a> authorized the secret Cambodian Campaign<\/a>. Coppola said that Rheault was an inspiration for the character of Colonel Kurtz<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup> The voice-over narration of Willard was written by war correspondent<\/a> Herr, whose 1977 Vietnam memoir Dispatches<\/a><\/i> brought him to the attention of Coppola.[6]<\/a><\/sup> A major influence on the film was Werner Herzog<\/a>‘s Aguirre, the Wrath of God<\/a><\/i> (1972), which also features a river journey and an insane soldier.[7]<\/a><\/sup> The film revolves around a river journey from South Vietnam<\/a> into Cambodia<\/a> undertaken by Captain Benjamin L. Willard (a character based on Conrad’s Marlow<\/a> and played by Sheen), who is on a secret mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz, a renegade Army officer accused of murder who is presumed insane.<\/p>\n

In Vietnam in 1970, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer (Robert Duvall), and a crazed freelance photographer (Dennis Hopper), Willard travels further and further into the heart of darkness.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
