Gladiator<\/b><\/i> is a 2000 epic<\/a> historical drama film<\/a> directed by Ridley Scott<\/a> and written by David Franzoni<\/a>, John Logan<\/a>, and William Nicholson<\/a>. The film was jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures<\/a> and Universal Pictures<\/a>. It stars Russell Crowe<\/a>, Joaquin Phoenix<\/a>, Connie Nielsen<\/a>, Ralf M\u00f6ller<\/a>, Oliver Reed<\/a> (in his final role), Djimon Hounsou<\/a>, Derek Jacobi<\/a>, John Shrapnel<\/a>, and Richard Harris<\/a>. Crowe portrays Hispano-Roman<\/a> general Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is betrayed when Commodus<\/a>, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius<\/a>, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor.<\/p>\n

Set in Roman times, the story of a once-powerful general forced to become a common gladiator. The emperor’s son is enraged when he is passed over as heir in favour of his father’s favourite general. He kills his father and arranges the murder of the general’s family, and the general is sold into slavery to be trained as a gladiator – but his subsequent.<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n
